Wayne Robert Hasselquist, 93, passed away April, 17, 2026, at home holding his wife's hand and surrounded by family and friends.
Wayne was born January 31, 1933, to Verner and Alice (Melotz) Hasselquist in Omaha, Nebraska.
He attended school in Omaha graduating from Benson High in 1951. After high school he attended Nebraska Christian College and the Junior College in Norfolk, Nebraska. In his 5th year of college he taught music at Winside, Nebraska, and began student preaching at Orchard, Maywood and Liberty Christian Church near Arcadia.
On August 21, 1955, he married Elizabeth Jane Dunham in Denver, Colorado. They celebrated 70 years of marriage. Three children were blessed to this marriage. Leeah (Will) Penny of Sargent, Michael (Krysteen) Hasselquist of Arizona City, Arizona and Melinda (Randy) Luchtenburg of Norfolk, Nebraska.
In 1956 Wayne started his first full time ministry in Indianola, Nebraska. He served 58 years in full time ministry serving also in Skidmore, Missouri, Sargent, Nebraska, and Sterling, Colorado. He was instrumental in starting the Countryside Christian Church in Maryville, Missouri. Wayne also spent time keeping the doors open at Christian Student Fellowship, a UNK campus ministry, and served in prison ministry in Colorado. He was active as camp manager at Flaming Spirit Christian Camp in Missouri and Pible Bible Camp near Ericson, Nebraska. Wayne finally retired to Sargent, Nebraska, in 2010.
During his lifetime he learned to fly and co-owned a J3 Cub. He enjoyed the horses he owned over the years and liked to tell people he was a One Horse Preacher. He enjoyed singing with two Barbershop groups; the Centennial State Chorus in Sterling, Colorado and the Valley Harmonizers in Ord, Nebraska. Wayne was a well-known Handyman, loved to mechanic on small engines and vehicles and took pride in refinishing the violins his father made. He also loved to visit with anyone that would talk to him and never knew a stranger. His greatest strength was calling on the sick and grieving, giving encouragement and praying with them for their needs.
Wayne is preceded in death by his parents, an infant brother Warren Franklin and great-grandson Hunter Janssen.
Wayne is survived by his wife Jane; his three children; seven grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren; sisters Shirley Fiene of Sargent, Beverly Ostling of Snohomish, Washington, Carol (Tim) Rhoades of Everett, Washington, and brother Roger (Janine) Hasselquist of Webb City, Missouri. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, April 28, 2026, at 11:00 AM at the Church of Christ in Sargent, NE. Burial will be at a later date in Malvern Cemetery in Malvern, Iowa. Memorials are suggested to Pibel Bible Church Camp at Spalding, NE. A visitation will be held on April 28th from 9:30 to service time at the Church.
