Mary Luella Taylor was born May 21, 1930, in Brewster, Nebraska, the daughter of the late Edward Michael McCormick and Pearl Comfort (Dugger) McCormick. Mary was born in a “soddy” a 12’X14’ cabin constructed of sod made blocks. Mary had fond memories of the cabin and farm life in the sandhills of Nebraska. Her stories of her childhood could transport you to another place and time and another way of life, pure and simple. She was raised and received her education in the Brewster community. In 1950, she married William H. Embree of Sutherland, Nebraska. They left Nebraska for the promise of better jobs out west. They lived in Idaho, Washington, and Nevada before putting down roots in the outlying area of Gaston, Oregon. They were blessed with five children Aaron, Beth (died as an infant), Clyde, Diane, and Edith. Mary was talented as an artist, gardener, and seamstress and an outstanding cook. Her marriage to Bill Embree dissolved in 1971. Mary went on to work in the Healthcare Industry as a CNA at the Masonic Home in Forest Grove. In 1973, she met Donn L. Taylor, also from Nebraska, working as a master welder on the construction of Hagg Lake Dam in Scoggins Valley. In 1975, she was united in marriage to Donn Taylor in Las Vegas, Nevada. Donn had two children from his first marriage, Don and Nancy. Following their marriage, they lived in the community of Forest Grove. In 1978, they moved to the Hillsboro community, where she had lived since.
Mary was preceded in death by her parents, Edward and Pearl McCormick; by her brothers David, Dick, Leslie, and her sister Vera Rohrs. Her youngest brother James passed in February 2025.
