Dr. A.L. “Lance” Jones age 91 of Broken Bow, NE passed away Tuesday, January 5, 2021 at Off Broadway in Broken Bow, NE.

A private Graveside Service will be held Friday, January 8, 2021 at the Broken Bow Cemetery in Broken Bow, NE with Pastor Matt Fowler officiating. Memorials are suggested to the Broken Bow United Methodist Church. A public visitation will be held on Thursday, January 7, 2021 from 9:00 am to 7:00 pm at Govier Brothers Mortuary in Broken Bow, NE. Govier Brothers Mortuary are in charge of arrangements. An online guest book may be signed at www.govierbrothers.com for words of encouragement or remembrance. A Celebration of Life Service will be held at a later date.

Dr Alanson Loud Jones         1929-2021

Dr Alanson (Lance or Doc) Loud Jones was born February 23, 1929, at Cape Girardeau, M0, and died January 5, 2021, in Broken Bow, NE. He was the second son of Boy Mosley Jones and Helen Loud Jones.

Lance graduated from high school at New Madrid, Missouri, in 1946, and from the University of Missouri in 1950 with a Bachelor of Science degree in animal husbandry.

He was a Korean War veteran (1950-1954) and discharged from the Air Force with the rank of Tech Sergeant.

After the service, he graduated from The University of Missouri with a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine                                    in 1958. In 1955 he married Sherrill Waldo from Gordon, NE, and celebrated 65 years of marriage. The union had three children, Carolyn Sue, Diane Lucille, and Dr Bruce Alanson Jones.

After graduation from veterinary school, the family moved to Broken Bow, NE, in 1958. Dr Jones practiced veterinary medicine at Grassland Hospital and Jones Veterinary Service for 32 years.

Lance had several avocations – tennis, fast pitch softball pitcher, jazz drummer, and many years as a breeder and exhibitor of purebred Hereford cattle.

Doc had a family legacy of the Methodist Church and was an active member all his life. He was a member of the American Veterinary Medical Association, the American Hereford Association, the American Legion, state, and national cattlemen’s associations, BPOE and VFW.

Lance was an Eagle Scout and gave support to the Boy Scouts in Broken Bow. He identified with the Custer County Fair in many ways and was a loyal supporter of 4-H activities. As a long-time member of the Broken Bow School Board, he had the honor to present his three children their high school diplomas.

In retirement, Doc enjoyed visiting with his children, watching Missouri and Nebraska sports, following the St. Louis Cardinals, and playing drums for the church choir.

Dr Jones is survived by his wife Sherrill, daughter Carolyn and husband Dave Rux of Aurora, Co, Diane and husband Kevin Sass of Clive, IA, and son Dr Bruce and wife Ashley Jones of Cape Girardeau, MO. He also had 11 grandchildren and four great grandchildren.
