Joy was united in marriage to Lynn Estergard on November 10, 1968 in Callaway. Over the next few years, the couple welcomed two daughters, Suzann Lynae in 1971 and Kristin Nichole in 1974. The family moved to North Platte so Joy could attend Mid Plains Community College; she graduated with her Licensed Practical Nursing degree in 1978. The family returned to their hometown and Joy was employed at the Callaway District Hospital, where she worked for many years.

Joy was an active member of the United Methodist church in North Platte, NE where she volunteered her time.

Joy enjoyed gardening and tending to her flowers; she received yard of the month twice while in North Platte. She enjoyed cross stitch and embroidery crafts. Joy was a good cook and loved having family and friends to the lake house during the summer. Larry and Joy were able to travel to Hawaii and Jamaica after retirement. Most of all, Joy enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren. She loved to take them on adventures, host them at the lake, play board games, and take them shopping, where she would spoil them.
