She then attended Chadron College Prep School for two years. She graduated from Rushville High School in 1934, during the Great Depression. She worked for her parents for one year and then attended Chadron college for one year, where she received a certificate which allowed her to teach in a rural school for three years, which she did. She rode horseback several miles, every day to teach. She then went back to Chadron to college and in 1942 Hazelle received her Bachelor of Art Degree.

On August 17, 1942 Hazelle married Hubert Frank Finney at Chadron, NE at the Congregational minister’s home, where several members of her family were also married. To this union two sons were born John Michael and Joe Emmet. They were married over 62 years, when Hubert passed away on October 28, 2004.

Hazelle grew up in a Christian home, but because of distance, she didn’t attend church until she went to high school at which time, she attended the Congregational Church.
