Betty was born in Granville, Iowa to Frederick P. Gaul and Josephine Kolbeck-Gaul. Betty was the fourth born child of nine. Betty’s two surviving siblings are Bob Gaul (Gene) of Sioux City, IA and Pat Ruppert of Madison, NE. Betty has four children with three surviving; Diana Carlin San Antonio, TX. Dave Larson Bellevue, NE. Dan Larson (Rhonda) Lincoln, NE. Betty has 16 grandchildren and 23 great grandchildren.
Ralph and Betty were joined in Marriage in Omaha, NE on November 26, 1955. They retired in the Arnold, Nebraska area in the fall of 1989. This began a 37-year adventure on the Lost Cabin Ranch with the South Loup River running through it. The Lost Cabin Ranch became, and remains, the core destination location of our family. ‘Grandma’ always took the time to make every visit from every family member special. Whether a weekend get-away for any given family or the grand annual gathering at Thanksgiving, she always had ‘a plan.’ This past Thanksgiving she hosted a crew of 38 family members in five rv’s as well as lodging in local motels/AB&B’s.
Betty, without a doubt, was a majestic matriarch. She led our family through modeling her faith in our Lord Jesus Christ. She was never one to pass judgement and accepted others unconditionally. Her actions spoke louder than words. Betty poured her heart and soul into St. Agnes Church as ‘the thrift shop lady.’ She spent tireless years running the thrift shop in the basement of the church opening every other Friday for business. She had ample interfaith support from the Arnold community churches which sustained the thrift shop over time. Betty was a devout member of the St. Agnes Catholic Women’s group and led by example.
Betty took great pride in the ‘continuous improvement’ of the Lost Cabin Ranch. An upgrade list and repair list were ever present. Family members affectionately referred to it as; “the list.’ All family members chipped in all the time in an effort to meet her expectations and enjoy her approval. Betty took enormous pride in her home, lawn, and flower beds. As recently as last fall she was out weeding her flower beds in preparation for the upcoming Thanksgiving holiday.
Betty was preceded in death by her parents Fred and Josephine, husband Ralph, daughter Deborah, brothers Mick, Paul, Tom, Dick, Bill, and sister Ardene.
Memorials are suggested to St. Agnes Catholic Women to be sent to 503 N Carroll st, Arnold, NE 69120.
