Arlene Schmidt

October 6, 1930 — January 17, 2010

Arlene Schmidt age 79 formerly of Broken Bow died Sunday January 17, 2010 in Wahoo, NE. Funeral services will be held Friday January 22, 2010 at 10:00 AM at the First Christian Church in Broken Bow with Reverend Dan Rowlison officiating. Burial will be in the Grandview Cemetery at Anselmo. Visitation will be held Thursday January 21, 2010 8 AM to 8 PM at Govier Bros. Mortuary with the family greeting friends 6 PM to 8 PM. Goldie Arlene Sheets was born October 6, 1930 at the family home in Lenora, KS to Merle and Opal (Wagner) Sheets. She was born six weeks premature weighing only three pounds. The family moved to Brewster when she was just a young child. Arlene graduated from Brewster High School in 1948. She married Berten Schmidt on May 24,1953, and they made their home on the Bert Schmidt family ranch west of Anselmo, NE. Berten and Arlene had three children Karen, Peggy and Gerald. Arlene and Berten ranched and Arlene began working as a nurse’s aide in 1975 at Jennie Melham Medical Center in Broken Bow. She continued working there until she retired in 2006. Berten passed away in 1989 at which time Arlene moved to Broken Bow. Arlene was a member of Lillian Church of Christ for many years and after moving to Broken Bow she attended the First Christian Church. She enjoyed spending time with her family and friends in the community. She attended and thoroughly enjoyed two Bible studies. Her children took turns caring for her when declining health prevented her from living alone. In January 2009 she moved to South Haven Living Center in Wahoo, NE. Survivors include her son Gerald (Deb) Schmidt of Colon, NE, daughters Karen (Silver) Hunt of Bassett, NE and Peggy (Mike) Trew of Gibbon, NE, three brothers Duane (Lois) Sheets of Sacramento, CA, Doyle (Betty) Sheets of Bend, OR, and Don (Sharon) Sheets of Caldwell, ,ID. Thirteen grandchildren, twenty three great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Berten and her sister Velda.
