Ruth Elizabeth Applegarth

Broken Bow, NE- Ruth Applegarth age 81 of Ishpeming, Michigan formerly of Broken Bow died Friday December 24, 2010 at the Marquette General Hospital in Marquette, Michigan. She was born August 14, 1929, in Anselmo, Nebraska, a daughter of the late Charles and Mabel (Booth) Land. She was a 1947 graduate of Comstock High School and received her Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees from Kearney State College. On June 12, 1948 she married Alvin Applegarth in Broken Bow, NE and he preceded her in death on December 13, 1991. Ruth was a public school teacher for 41 years and retired in 1992 from the Merna-Anselmo School District. She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Broken Bow, NE where she taught CCD classes and was a member of the altar society. Ruth was also a member of the Nebraska Teachers Association. She loved art, particularly, painting and enjoyed bingo, cards and spending time with her grandchildren. She is survived by three children, Susan Hauser of Omaha, NE, Charles (Terry) Applegarth of Easton, PA and Lenora (Michael) McKeen of Gwinn; grandchildren, Stacy & Travis Hauser, Austin, Michaela and Katelyn McKeen; great-grandchildren, Lizzy and Kate Hauser; and siblings, Johnny Land of Gwinn and Barb (Jim) Campbell of Gwinn. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and siblings, Bud Land, George Land and Marie Budenbender. Visitation will be held on Thursday, December 30, 2010 from 4 to 6 p.m. with the Rosary to follow at 6p.m. at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Broken Bow, NE. The Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Friday at 10am at St. Joseph Catholic Church with Rev. Jim Hunt officiating. Interment will be in St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be directed to Govier Brothers Mortuary at 542 S. 9 th Street, Broken Bow, NE 68822 to help defray funeral expenses.
